Julia Galloway Workshop

I spent Friday night and all day Saturday at a Julia Galloway pottery workshop.  She is an amazing potter who does wonders with surface work and was THE MOST inspiring speaker!  If you have a chance to see her ever, DO IT!  In the meantime, visit her website at http://www.juliagalloway.com/.

She did demos on tumblers, handles and spouts, salt and pepper bowls, and more, working mainly with porcelain.  She throws standing up, which was something new to me...maybe I'll give it a try sometime!

What I gained most from her presentation was to learn to be comfortable with my own style, and to not be afraid to experiment.  Boy, is that a growing edge for me!  "Make enough that you don't mind losing some...at least in the beginning," she says.  She shared her journey as a potter with us, which, as always, includes challenges.  One thing she said that really stuck with me was, "You never know how great a predicament is, until you're in it!"  In other words, you grow from those struggles (a truth for life in general, I'd say).

She brought some items available to purchase like these sweet little cloud cups...

And this beautiful salt and pepper pot...

I was ecstatic to be able to purchase this adorable lidded salt bowl!  It was a popular item, and I was watching my back when I walked to my car at the end of the workshop!  LOL!  Check out the hollow lid on this and the fine surface decoration...oh...and the lid is a rattle, too!  Can't get much sweeter!  I'll be finding a place of honor in my home for this little treasure!

Well, off to make some pots today!  See you next time!
Jean :)

Choir of Angels!

One of my favorite things to do is play with clay. You may have seen my photo of these before they were glazed. What a difference a bit of color makes!

Ready for Glazing...

Good thing it's another snow day! I have my work cut out for me glazing these sweet fellows! Once their finished, they'll be taking a trip up to Lake Geneva, WI where they'll be waiting for you at the Roycetra shop!

I call them Prayer Partners, and they are based on Asian Jizos. They are a thoughtful gift for someone who might be going through a difficult time. I like knowing that my ceramic pieces are bringing some comfort into the world!

Stay warm if you must travel outdoors in the midwest today!

I have not stopped giving thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers.

Super Cute Sunday!

If you didn't notice, my blogging energy has been on a serious level of empty lately. I've been too busy with too many other things, and every time I sat down to write, nothing would come out. Really. Nothing. Nada. Zip.

I finally had to admit that it was time to spice things up a bit on this blog and figure out a way to add some more smiles! So welcome to my very first "Super Cute Sunday!" Hopefully, the first of many to come!

If you know me at all, you know that I usually spend a good part of Sundays at the stable with my daughter. And usually, I bring along a bag of clay to help pass the time. Today, I also brought in some delicious mini cupcakes (pastelitos en espanol) that were left over from a party I went to last night. Many thanks to Leo for baking those tasty treats! As I was offering the cupcakes to the riders and grooms, I realized that I HAD TO make a mini cupcake out of clay. :)

When I got home, the cute clay creations continued (it must be letter C week somewhere out there) and I created two cute cats! And just in case you're wondering about the size of these clay creations...I threw in a coin as well :)

Criminy! It's a cacophony of C's!! Oh well...just call me crazy! Let me know if you find any extreme cuteness in the world, and I may add it to next Sunday's post!

Till next time,

Cute as a button!

Horse Crazy!

I've been in a super busy mode getting ready for a horse show! It was very different from how my equestrian daughter was preparing. My preparation involved carving clay ponies at warp speed, but the result was well worth the effort!

It all started 3 weeks ago when I showed one of the riding instructors my (finally completed) 12 little clay ponies that I had been working on this summer. That's when she said, "You should be a vendor at our next show on August 23rd!" Of course, I could have settled for having 10 or 20 ponies at my table, but I decided to set a goal of 50!

Well, I exceeded my goal, and ended up with 51! It was a terrific learning experience to create so many little horses in such a short period of time. As I continued to create, I found ways to improve the basic form, and figured out some new techniques that would speed up the process. I bought some new glazes so I could make "paint ponies" - all of which sold at the show yesterday (I'll definitely be making more of those!!).

For each pony, I also sewed a small bag for safe transport to the show which doubled as "packaging" for the buyer (I guess I could call them my shipping wraps!). I started making them out of felt, but then realized that I had several old pairs of riding pants that I could recycle for this purpose.

The best part of the show was watching the faces and listening to the comments of the people who stopped at my table. I loved hearing about their favorite color glaze, and hearing their "oohs" and "aahs" about how cute the ponies were.

Of course, making a sale was fun, too! Not only for receiving a financial return for my creations, but also to hear the reason behind the purchase. One woman bought a blue pony, because she had an old "retired" horse named Blue. Another woman bought the black spotted paint pony for her young daughter who was riding a similar REAL pony in the show (was it Kiki?). She said, "Don't tell my daughter about it if she stops by. It's going to be a surprise for her at the end of the show." (I hope she likes it!!)

I also brought along a "rescue pony" that I ended up giving to a young girl. It was one of those creations that I just wasn't completely happy with, and I almost took a hammer to it and ended it's very short life (artists do that sometimes). In the end, I'm thankful that I brought it along, because now I know that it has a good home with a young lady named Amanda :) I'm also glad that I met Amanda because she taught me that people aren't short, they're fun size!

So much fun!! I can't wait to do it again!! By the way, if my first pottery teacher at the local community college is reading this....Tony, I know we weren't allowed to make anything cute while we were learning at your studio, but it turns out that cute is my niche! I kind of wish it didn't take me 10 years to figure that out...but at least I know it now!!

Last but not least, I wanted to say thank you to some of the people who have been such an important part of my creative journey...Neil, thank you for always being so supportive of my sometimes crazy creations, and thank you, thank you, thank you for selling me your old reliable kiln. It's actually been fired up 11 times (hard to believe from someone who would only make 4 pots a year in your studio space, eh?). Serena, thank you for giving me such a great deal on your old pro camera. While I still have a long way to go, your camera is being used almost daily, and this blog would be pretty ugly without it! Nikki, Rob and Judi...you have all been such supportive and encouraging friends in so many ways. I'm so blessed to have all of you in my life! Hooray for friends!!!

And hooray for real ponies, too...

Have a marvelous Monday wherever you are, and until next time...

Little Clay Houses...Finished!!

Hooray! I finished my first 50 little clay houses! I am absolutely in love with the fun new glazes I used! There are about 15 other bright colors I'm hoping to try out before the year is through. Too much fun!

Little Clay Houses

...for you and me :)

Of course, you're probably wondering why I'm making little clay houses. Well, you never know when these little babies will be looking for a new home!!

I found these 5 baby house wrens in our hanging basket last week. Too cute!!

I can't believe how fast they're growing!

What a blessing to be able to watch these little miracles grow up! As soon as the rain stops, I'll post some more pictures!

Creating Ceramic Crosses

My latest project is underway! In the last week, I've created TWENTY ceramic crosses from hand rolled slabs of white stoneware clay. First I used a template to cut them into the same shape. Then as they began to dry out, I stamped each of them with one of my hand carved ceramic stamps. I used different stamps for each one, so I now have 20 original design ideas!

Twelve of them are already bone dry (which means they are ready to go into the kiln), but the remaining eight have a day or so left till before I can load them for their first (bisque)firing. And the twelve little ponies have been waiting patiently for temperature to start rising...(kind of like I've been waiting patiently for the warmer summer temperatures here in the midwest!!)

Within the week, they should all be glazed and ready to load into the kiln for their final firing! Which glazes will I use?
Turquoise...Chun Plum...Seaweed...or something else? Only time will tell!!

Hmmmmm....I can't wait to see the final results! I'll keep you updated! Thanks for visiting, and till next time...

Ceramic Sushi Dishes

I always tell my preschool students to give themselves a pat on the back when they do a good job...well, tonight I'm giving myself a pat on the back! I've been feeling a "push" for quite a while to start marketing my art, but the push has been in super slow motion.

Tonight, I decided to just start moving and take some photos for my Etsy shop. I absolutely LOVE how this photo turned out! It looks so inviting, I just might buy these dishes for myself (LOL!!) And the best part is...I'm inspired to make some more of these sweet dishes!

Evolution of the, um, Horse....

Hey Gumby!
Quit waving to everyone, and take a look at this! It kind of looks like a horse, but something's not quite right...I think I need some help over here! Can someone tell me what's going on??

Obviously, Pokey, you haven't been here very long...this is one of those common primitive horses - it just hasn't evolved yet. Stuff like this happens all the time around here. But this one is made of something different from me....hmmmm...

Hey! I think it's related to me! I'm one of those rare "earless ponies" that people hardly ever see anymore. I'm sure glad that I can read, otherwise I'd be totally missing this conversation!!

I don't know, VanGough....I think that this fellow is going to be able to hear eventually. Those two things by his feet look like they might be ears. Besides, there's been a rumor going around that you might be the last of the earless ponies...and good thing I can type, cause I just realized I don't have a mouth!

Your speculation is over friends! I can tell you exactly what's going on here! Our Mom has been busy creating ceramic ponies that will be appearing at her Etsy shop in June! She's not too thrilled with her shop right now, otherwise she'd put in one of those handy hyperlinks for you to click on :)
(trust me, wait till June!)

Some of you loyal followers know that we have a real live horse to care for (along with a 17 year old daughter who is planning for a career in the equestrian field). Mom is hoping that the ceramic ponies will help support the dreams of that talented young girl. Right now, the goal is to own a 2nd pair of riding pants!

Don't forget about me up here, little sister...There's another daughter in the family who is planning to travel to India next January for 3 weeks on a college trip. I think I heard Mom say that she'd help out with that if she could!

Yep...without a doubt, our Mom definitely loves those girls, and she loves watching them grow up to follow their dreams! Ah...the things we do for love :)

Till Next Time...

The Ponies are Coming!

A sweet little polymer clay pony emerged from my imagination recently. He decided to take a stroll outside on this beautiful day, when suddenly, an enormous cat got in his way. Maybe the little pony has a message....

"Bonjour Monsieur Chat! Maybe you're not scared of me...but be warned...I am not alone! Just wait...now that summer vacation is almost here, I am certain that I will soon be joined by many more of my kind. So run now, while you have the chance!!"

A Sense of Hope

It's Monday night, and I just returned from my Monday Art Night with Nikki. We had a special guest join us tonight (welcome to the club, Emily!). I just finished my Chapter 4 project of Taking Flight. I am making the project "my own" by adding my own personal touch of bisque fired clay pieces...and subtracting the wings that Kelly Rae shows us how to make in her book.

We did actually make some wings tonight, but I just didn't feel like they belonged on this book. Here's what they look like for now...

I'll hang on to them, because I'm sure I'll figure out a way to use them in some future project!

Nikki...if you're reading this....I am so enjoying our art nights together! If only I could figure out how to make those wings really work, so I could fly out to see you every Monday night in California! Maybe I could attach them to Precious and turn her into a Pegasus pony :) I'll keep you up to date with my progress on that one!

And now for your reading pleasure...here's "Hope" by Emily Dickinson...

Hope

Hope is the thing with feathers
That perches in the soul,
And sings the tune--without the words,
And never stops at all,

And sweetest in the gale is heard;
And sore must be the storm
That could abash the little bird
That kept so many warm.

I've heard it in the chillest land,
And on the strangest sea;
Yet, never, in extremity,
It asked a crumb of me.

Joy!

Last night I finished this 4x4 mixed media piece on Blick Artist Board. I not only enjoyed the process of making it, but I really like the finished result as well. I think I'll make several more with different words and put them on my Etsy shop!

Just a short post today....

Did you ever realize that the words acceptance and patient use the same letters?
Hmmmmm...

See you soon!

My Clay Space...

I am so blessed to have a place in my house where I can go to play with clay! It's a 15 x 20 foot room in my basement, that I'm in the process of calling my own. It still has some things that need to be purged (e.g. can you see the fish in the photo below?)

I recently bought a used electric kiln from a friend, so it's definitely time to start creating! In November and December, I spent most of my clay time on the wheel, but lately, I've been feeling more called to make small pieces by hand, just for fun!

Today, I created a bit of delight,

along with some round tuits,

and some unicorn horns :)

So if you see any tiny unicorns that are missing a horn, tell them I have some extras! I'll probably paint them gold when they're out of the oven :)

I really love making small things out of clay, bisque firing them, and painting them with acyrlic paints. I'm getting quite a collection of these little bits and pieces! I think I'll be using them on some of the 6x6 artist boards that are lying around my house! I'll post some photos of the completed projects!

Oh...I almost forgot...I joined a new challenge yesterday! It's called The Creative Every Day Challenge, and you can find it at www.creativeeveryday.com.
The challenge is to create something each day of 2009 (which could become quite a challenge when my Christmas vacation is over!). Each month there will be a theme, and January's theme is PLAY! So today, in addition to playing in the basement with clay, I also started a mixed media piece called, "I Love to Play." (so sorry, but you'll have to wait to see that one!).

I recently finished 2 months of "Creating Every Day" on the Coach Creative Space website - what perfect preparation for this new challenge! Speaking of Coach Creative Space, if you are a Julia Cameron fan, you should take a look at the new Julia Cameron's readers groups at coachcreativespace.com. A group of us are just beginning to read The Vein of Gold! Come join us!!

May joy follow you until the next time!
